I went to a climbing gym today, called Rockreation. It was located in west Los angles in an industrial area. It was a midsized gym, about the size of Planet Rock in Pontiac, Michigan (if you are familiar). There is something to be said for a gym’s Feng shui. Now, I am not speaking with tons of experience in any way shape of form, just my humble observations.
Portland, Oregon has a chill and happy feel to it. Patrons are very nice and they have good things to say and they aren’t really in any kind of hurry. The staff are nice too, easy to talk to and to laugh with. Their gym had problems that were easy to find, great music and they set fairly intuitively.
Michigan patrons are a little more serious at times. They like to get the whole family involved. Also they are kind of dorkily excited about the whole rock climbing idea. They are pretty outdoorsy and enjoy the whole idea of climbing with wool socks and a tin can of beans over the fire.
Then we come to Los Angles, California. They are conscious of the visual benefits of this sport on their physique, a lot more muscular then other groups. They are fairly quiet, serious and focused. They are slightly boastful with a reason for it, very impressive crowd of people. Helpful shiny staff.
